Do you know how Instagram started?

Do you know how Instagram started? Who created it? In this blog, you will know the whole story of Instagram.

Mark Zuckerberg and Kevin Systrom are friends. And Mark had created Facebook. And it was becoming very popular although it was only for some selected colleges. Then Mark contacted his friend Kevin and asked him to create a photo-sharing feature for Facebook but Kevin did not accept this offer because he felt that Facebook was like a new trend that would end very soon. After that, Kevin went to Italy to get an education in his passion for photography.

After going to Italy, Kevin studied photography well which was later used by him to build Instagram. After completing his education and coming back from Italy, Kevin got a good opportunity to do an internship in a company named Odeo which we know as Twitter. Here I said “which we used to call Twitter” because today the name of Twitter has been changed again to X.

While working in Odeo, Kevin becomes friends with Jack Dorsey. After a few days, Kevin leaves the company. Kevin had lost two golden opportunities so far. Now, Kevin gets the idea of making his own app. And he starts learning to build an app. In just one year, he learns to make an app. And he makes his own app, which he names Bourbon.

Bourbon was the name of a whiskey brand and it was Kevin’s favorite whiskey, so he named his app after whiskey. Bourbon was a simple app that had a checking feature with the help of which we could share where we were and where we were going. Wherever we went on this app, we could share the image of the place in return for which we got virtual prices.

The more we post, the higher the virtual price.

Due to the conjuring feature and unattractive logo of this app, it could not attract many people. There were some features in the app that did not work properly.

One day Kevin goes to a party and convinces an investor to invest in the app. The investor invests $50,000 in the company. Seeing this, other investors also invest in the app and another investor invests $250,000 in the company. Seeing this, the first one also increases his investment from $50,000 to $250,000.

That was a time when people wanted to make money by investing in any new tech company in Silicon Valley. Now Kevin had money and vision. Now he needed a co-founder. Kevin hired his initial user Mike Krieger because Kevin knew him from a long time ago when he was at Stanford University.

Your Kevin had money and a business partner too. Now they had to solve the problems of Bourbon Up and grow the app. Kevin started taking feedback from its users. What do you like about this app and which feature do you dislike? From this, he came to know that people did not like the check sign and virtual price features.

They only liked the photo-sharing feature. Then an idea came to Kevin’s mind that there are many photo-sharing apps but there is no such app in which we can share photos with our friends, that too in one click.

After this, Kavin rebranded Bourbon and named it Instagram. The name Instagram was made up of two names, Instant and Telegram. Kevin was very happy with the new app and he showed this app to his girlfriend, his girlfriend said that I would not use this app because my pictures would not come out as good as my friend’s. And they will make fun of me.

Then Kavin got the idea of adding filters inside the app and as soon as Kevin added the filter, the app started growing very quickly.

How did Instagram become a unicorn?

On the very first day of its launch on the App Store, 25000 users downloaded the Instagram app. And in just one month, more than 1 million users joined Instagram. As Instagram started becoming famous, people started wanting to look good on social media and people started sharing more and more photos.

Instagram had 2 million users in no time but there were only 6 people operating it, out of which two were co-founders. Now they needed to expand the team and they also needed a bigger server. One day, the CEO of Twitter invites Kevin for dinner and tells Kevin that Twitter wants to acquire Instagram. But no one knew what was going on in Kevin’s mind.

After a few days, Mark Zuckerberg calls Kevin and says that I want to buy Instagram and he offers Kevin 1 billion dollars.

Mark tells Kevin that we can take Instagram to the next level. Mark knew what was going on in Kevin’s mind, that’s why he told Mark that Instagram would remain independent like before and you could do whatever you wanted. After this Kevin accepts the offer because Mark and Kevin were friends and they had discussed working together earlier.

That’s why it is said, “Instagram story begins with Mark Zuckerberg and ends with Mark Zuckerberg.”
